Wave Rider: Ray Collins
You can't obsess over the ocean as much as we do and not have a serious wave addiction — whether we're watching them, riding them, or simply trying to soak them all in, the ebbs and crashes of the sea are where we find solace and exhilarating inspiration. We've found a kindred spirit in photographer Ray Collins, whose epic shots of huge curls, deep funnels and the mesmerizing liquid surface of the sea have captured our attention. He puts himself in the center of the action for the perfect snap, and the results are transcendent. Here's a peek behind Collins' lens.
How would you describe your Insta feed in three words? Ephemeral, liquid, mountains.
Most beautiful face I've ever seen: Cillian Murphy from Peaky Blinders is impossibly handsome. As for females — there are too many to mention!
Best room with a view: Wherever I park my van along the coast I reckon!
Instagram account everyone should follow: @ifyouhigh
Person I most want to photograph: I haven't shot much portraiture of late but maybe LeBron James or Emily Ratajowski.
Work of art or (photograph) I can't stop thinking about: La Jument by Jean Guichard
Favorite camera to shoot with: The one I have with me. If not a Nikon D5 or D810, then the iPhone does the trick.
Biggest inspiration: Water and light, no doubt.
Where I haven't been that I most want to go: Brazil or Amsterdam
Best piece of photography advice I ever got: Shoot what YOU want to see, not what you think others want to see.
What makes someone beautiful? Owning their individuality.
What's more interesting to you (and why) – a natural look or a strongly made-up/crafted look? I like to treat each situation differently. Both can be brilliant, both can also go too far.
To filter or not? Do as much of the work in camera so filters are the final 3 percent of the work.
Favorite time of day to shoot: 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 mins after it has risen. Or in a thunderstorm.
A location that I'm dying to shoot at/in: Canary Islands, South Australia and Brazil
First memory of snapping a photograph: I'm 5 years old, my mother got me a disposable camera to take photos of some historic ships visiting Australia, I filled the roll with photos of my friends and the trip to the dock — no photos of ships! Ha.
Music that inspires me: Bon Iver
