Luli Fama's Mission To Enhance Bikini Bottoms Worldwide

Posted by Bikini Owner

Thanks to her stylish mother, Lourdes “Luli” Hanimian took an interest in fashion at an early age. Her coastal upbringing in Cuba and Miami helped her to develop an interest in fashion and eventually find a career in design. In 1990, she met fellow swimsuit aficionado Augusto Hanimian, who became both her brother-in-law and design partner. After working in the industry for years and launching a junior swim line, Cover Style, the creative duo debuted Luli Fama in 2003.

More than ten years later, the line has yet to lose its luster. A regular at Mercedes-Benz Swim Week and a wardrobe staple for the SI Swimsuit Edition, Luli Fama is a star favorite.

The spicy swimwear has been seen on some of Hollywood’s most famous bodies like Beyoncé Knowles, Jennifer Aniston, Shakira, and Kate Hudson. Its runway reputation is just as elite. Models Marissa Miller, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Nina Agdal, Alessandra Ambrosio and more all choose the line’s ruched bikinis for beach retreats around the world.

Famous for their colorful custom prints and sexy silhouettes, Luli Fama creates dream-like collections. This year, the inspiration was a paradise island where any fantasy could come true.

Next season's inspiration? We’ll have to wait and see. Like Luli teases, “We don’t kiss and tell!”

Shop our favorite Luli Fama looks here and read on for our interview with designer Luli Hanimian.

Bikini: How would you describe the Luli Fama woman?

Luli: Fashionable, sexy and confident.

Bikini: How does the Luli Fama stand out from other swimwear lines?

Luli: We are very known for the prints we design.

Bikini: How has your famous scrunch bottom bikini changed over time?

Luli: It started out as a Brazilian tie side. Now, we offer it with different coverage and cuts.

Bikini: What would you tell a girl who is hesitant to wear a cheeky cut?

Luli: To trust me that the more coverage there is, the bigger you will look.

Bikini: What’s your advice on how to look sexy and confident on the beach?

Luli: You need to wear what you feel comfortable in.

Bikini: What is the best part of your job?

Luli: Traveling: either for inspiration to work on prints or to meet the consumers directly.

Bikini: Which prints or cuts are you most excited about this season?

Luli: I love our new strappy corsets and cheeky bottoms.

Bikini: Do you have a favorite suit?

Luli: Hard to say! There are so many different looks you can get by mixing and matching. This weekend, I wore the "La Fama" triangle top with the "Verano de Rumba" strappy Brazilian in "Hot Mess" and I loved it!

Bikini: What do you think is the biggest swimwear trend at the moment?

Luli: Bottoms that emphasize the butt.

Bikini: You’re no stranger to the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. What was your reaction to seeing this year’s issue and how did you celebrate?

Luli: It is so exciting every year! I was lucky enough to celebrate at LIV in Miami with the editors MJ and Darcie and all the SI models, including Hannah Davis, who is our Luli Fama model this year.

Bikini: Many models and celebrities are fans of Luli Fama. Is there someone you have not yet seen in your designs whom you’d love to style?

Luli: Jessica Alba! I just ran into her in LA and couldn't believe how gorgeous she is. She would look great in anything.

Bikini: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and what would you do?

Luli: I am constantly traveling and love to see different places and cultures. But I would love to visit my Island Cuba when it's free. I would go see where I lived as a little girl.

Bikini: What are your top three beach essentials?

Luli: Sunblock, a chic Luli Fama cover up and sunglasses from the new Luli Fama Eye Candy collection.
