Today's question:

Hi Bikini Whisperer,

I’ve been searching for a moderate to full coverage bikini bottom that isn’t overly matronly. I love cheeky bottoms, but don’t feel comfortable wearing this style around my family. Can you help me find a suit that's grandma-approved and also chic enough to rock at a friend’s pool party?

Hey there!

Moderate to full coverage bottoms are your safest bet when hanging out with grandma, but they don't necessarily mean you have to compromise style. Though they provide more coverage, a stylish flair is still achievable. Look for sleek fabrics, bold prints and patterns, even embellishments. Peek-a-boo skin detailing like cutouts and lace-up ties are the best way to add a sexy appeal. For a more classic approach, choose a high-waist — this conservative look accentuates the waistline and curves.

Mara Hoffman Chey top, $140 and Lydia bottom, $145

Fit is everything, especially with this type of bottom. Skip tight hemlines that cut into cheeks by selecting a seamless style with a clean finish.  To make sure your fit is right, tug fabric away from the skin — two fingers should comfortably fit between your skin and the fabric. Keep in mind wet Lycra expands at least half an inch, so make sure the fabric is snug enough to support this kind of a stretch. If you can fit more than two fingers between your skin and the fabric (when tugging away), size down to a smaller size.

Yumi Kim Bayside top, $78 and Retro Chic bottom, $78

Balance a feminine print with cutouts or lace-up side ties that add a sexy appeal. Plus, they're great on fit, adjusting to your exact curves.

Beach Joy Mesh High Neck top, $29 and  Mesh High Waisted bottom, $24

Take a full coverage bottom to edgy heights by playing with mesh inserts and fabrication combos. Nothing screams modern more than mesh so when in doubt select a suit with sheer details.

Keep the bottom minimal and all eyes on the bikini top by adding volume — ruffles and texture do well. This is especially flattering for pear shapes.

Beth Richards Florence top, $120 and Naomi bottom, $100

A snug-fitted bottom with a double stitching hem secures the bikini in place – which is great for splashing in water, surfing, and any other activity.

Norma Kamali Gold Stud Underwire Bra, $270 and Gold Stud Underwire bottom, $395

For an uber on-trend look, choose the newest silhouttee — high-waist bikini brief. This '80s inspired style provides the coverage you want while elongating the legs. For a wow factor, look for embellishments — grommets and metal rings are the freshest this season.
