Following Victoria Germyn from Milan to Manhattan

Victoria Germyn is not your average New Yorker. Scouted by an agent at 12 in her home in Sweden, she jetted off to Greece at 14 to launch her modeling career. After stints in the fashion capital of Milan and the beach babe capital of Australia, she headed to the city that never sleeps — and never left.

We were lucky enough to catch Victoria between modeling gigs and get the scoop on her favorite places in NYC, her take on Team Jersey Shore versus Team Hamptons, and her future on and off the runway.

BIKINI: What’s your favorite place you’ve ever traveled for work?

VICTORIA GERMYN: Probably Byron Bay in Australia. It’s beautiful. You get that hakuna matata feeling, with everybody walking around in their bathing suits, and you go surfing, and all your worries just melt away when you get there. It’s really something special.

BIKINI: What’s your favorite modeling job you’ve ever had?

VG: A job I did for Korres, a skin brand. We all went to Mykonos and it was the off-season, so there were no people there, and they basically rented the island and we just spent four or five days there. I got to shoot with Guy Aroch, who is amazing. We just went around on our little scooters, shot with the cows and the donkeys, and it was really something special.

BIKINI: What’s the hardest thing about your job?

VG: The long days. Sometimes you don’t get a lot of sleep, and you have to stay healthy and be rested. Always looking great when you sometimes don’t feel great can be hard.

BIKINI: What are your favorite ways to stay healthy?

VG: Drinking lots of water is key, and getting rest. I try to work out every day. And just not think about it too much. If you start overthinking it, you’ll drive yourself crazy. I try to have a healthy approach to it.

BIKINI: Do you have any secrets for when you wake up in the morning and you didn’t necessarily get enough sleep or you’re not feeling so great? What do you do to wake yourself up and make yourself look better than you feel?

VG: Matcha is a new obsession I have. It’s like green tea, but it’s better than coffee — sometimes. I’ll have a huge matcha and lots of water, take a cold shower, and then just tell myself, even if I’m so tired, I say, “I have so much energy. I can do this. Let’s go." When you change your mindset and tell yourself that, your body follows.

BIKINI: What was it like opening and closing the runway for the Hot as Hell show at Miami Swim Week?

VG: It was amazing! It was so much fun. I love them. Their whole team is just incredible. We even flew my best friend out with me, so I got to got through the whole experience with her, which was a lot of fun. It was my first time in Miami as well. It was really fun — more like vacation almost. Plus I got to be the center of attention, which I loved!

BIKINI: What’s a brand or photographer you haven’t worked with but would love to?

VG: I would love to shoot with Mario Testino. Of all the big photographers, I really love his photos. Brands, I mean, Prada, Chanel–I would love to shoot for them, it would be incredible. I’d love to walk for Victoria’s Secret, that would be amazing. There are so many, I could go on all day! But that’s a few.

BIKINI: Who are your idols or mentors in the business?

VG: Kate Moss. She’s been in the business for so long and she’s still doing it. Definitely her.

BIKINI: How do you think your work will evolve in the coming years?

VG: I hope I can make a name for myself, I really do. That’s a hard question, but I think it’s going to go well. I have a good feeling. I love what I do, and I think if you have passion, the good will come. I have a good feeling.

BIKINI: You rocked the underboob trend at New York Fashion Week. What are your thoughts on the trend?

VG: Actually, I wasn’t meant to do that! I mean don’t get me wrong, I love showing my boobs, but it wasn’t planned. Right before I walked out, the designer took my bathing suit and lifted it up, and said, “This is so great, you look sick." So I did it and it was really fun. I’m very open with sexuality and your body. Everyone should love their body. So I’m into the trend for sure!

BIKINI: Where else have you lived and how did you end up in New York?

VG: I’m Swedish-Norwegian. I was born in Norway and grew up in Sweden. My mom is Norwegian and my dad is Swedish. I was scouted when I was really young — 12 — and then when I was 14 or 15, I went to Greece. I spent six months there because I liked it so much. I had a lot of fun in Greece. Then I went from Greece to Milan, spent six months there, and then from Milan I went to Australia, spent six months there, and then I got my visa, so that’s when I came to New York.

BIKINI: Would you ever live anywhere else?

VG: Right now, no. I love New York. I have a lot of friends here. Maybe in the future, I’d want to move. Maybe back to Greece actually, or Italy, perhaps. But for now, no, I love New York.

BIKINI: What’s your favorite thing about New York?

VG: The city. Its chaos. I kind of like it. I find peace in the great chaos. If it’s too calm for me, I get very nervous. So New York is perfect, with things happening all the time.

BIKINI: What are your favorite restaurants in New York?

VG: I love Sant Ambroeus in the West Village — really good Italian. I like Seamore’s in SoHo; it’s fish and they have amazing poke bowls. My favorite is Il Mulino, also in SoHo. It’s amazing and the staff is so friendly.

BIKINI: What do you like to do on the weekends? What would a perfect Saturday afternoon be for you?

VG: My best friend’s parents have a beach house in New Jersey, so if I’m off, we drive the car out there and we just spend all day at the beach, have dinner, go to the boardwalk, ride bikes, then rest and sleep when I get the time! Her family just took me in with open arms.

BIKINI: Are you team Jersey Shore or team Hamptons?

VG: Well, it depends. One of my best friends rented a house for the summer in the Hamptons. I have a different experience there because my friends don’t live there full-time, but I did spend a lot of time in the Hamptons and I love it, but it’s so expensive! In New Jersey I get the feeling of family, which I don’t get often. I really love that.
