Everyone Should Own a LBB — Here're the Top Picks

Our in-house expert, the Bikini Whisperer, is here to guide readers through their trickiest swimwear questions. Got a question of your own? Drop us a line!

Today's question:

Hi Bikini Whisperer,

I've procrastinated all summer long to buy a new swimsuit, and now that I'm heading on a beach getaway, I need one ASAP! I'm looking for a bikini that is ideal for a late summer trip but will also work in seasons to come. I don't want to buy multiple bikinis — I'd rather spend money on travel experiences, so is there a single, staple piece that you recommend? I don't typically feed into fast-fashion and would rather have an excellent, great-quality bikini that I can wear to various places in multiple looks and keep long term. What do you have in mind?

Basic, Not-So-Basic Chic

Hey there,

All this trendy talk gets us amped, but there's nothing more valuable than a quality, go-to swimwear staple. Although fads and trends aren't necessarily a one-season wonder, owning a basic (not-so-basic) piece in your swimsuit stash is absolutely necessary — it's like building a fashion foundation, where you can later add bikini buys with a forward punch.

Let's face it: every girl needs a #LBB the same way they need a #LBD in their closet. Black is the chicest, must-have color, so why not start from there? It is versatile, looks elevated without a high-price tag and is ultra-classic.

Here's what I've scouted for you keeping in mind four key elements: essential, fashionable, versatile and timeless.

Midnight Co. Bella Top, $46 and Bella Bottom, $46

You can never go wrong with a string bikini that adjusts to your exact bust and hip shape. Dress it up with body chains or down with a breezy romper

Marble Swimwear Gigi Top, $85 and Capri Bottom, $85

If you seek support, choose a clean silhouette with zero frills — it's built to stay in place.

Sohn + Sea Chloe Top, $150 and Dylan Bottom, $109

Mesh inserts take this bikini to another level. This top, when paired with flowy high-waisted bottoms, is perfect for a candlelit vacay date.

Beth Richards Coco One-piece, $250

One-pieces are the most versatile, doubling as bodysuits when paired with ready-to-wear bottoms.

Dalina Ford Swim Pia One-piece, $95

If you seek a sexy edge, opt for a streamlined yet daring neckline. A little dip goes a long way.
