DIY A Closet Detox With This Stylist's Tips

You can only read the headline "New Year, New You" so many times: Yes, the new year is a great time to hit the reset button, but is an entire reboot really necessary? We kind of like quite a lot about ourselves, so we're focusing more on optimizing in 2017—getting leaner, meaner, and more focused. One place where we're particularly challenged in this respect? Our closets.

There's something about the overflow in our wardrobe—dresses we haven't worn in years, blouses with tags waiting for 'the right occasion'—that totally stumps us. When in doubt, call an expert, right? That's exactly what Jenny Greenstein of Your Soul Style is, and she designed her Closet Detox program to help clients cut through the clutter, separate themselves from nostalgic or erstwhile purchases—along with items that simply don't fit (size-wise or vibe-wise), and leave behind only the true gems that form the basis of an empowered wardrobe.

If that seems like a tall order, it is. "When I ask clients questions like, 'When is the last time you wore this?' and 'How do you feel when you wear this?' it helps me zero in on what's really worth keeping. Then, I help them style those keep items in ways they'd never consider, so they wind up with a new perspective on their wardrobe," Greenstein says. Sound like something you'd like to try? TIME: Give yourself ample time to go through your closet in its entirety. This may mean taking a full weekend day (or two!), but in order to fully cleanse, you’ll need to consider each item in your wardrobe and work it from top to bottom (including secondary items like shoes, accessories, and outerwear). 

ENSURE AN EMPOWERED WARDROBE: Your wardrobe should function as a vehicle to help you feel like your most beautiful and empowered self. As you work through each item, ask yourself questions like, “When is the last time I wore this? How do I feel when I wear this? Does this item best represent who I am? Does this item fit — or am I saving it with future hopes of a different shape? Am I emotionally attached to this item and why?” Evaluating each piece and understanding its implications will help you decide whether to keep or toss. 

RID THE NEGATIVITY: Holding on to items that either don’t fit or that you feel nostalgic about (but don’t wear) can create negative associations to your wardrobe. If something hasn’t been worn in over a year (and it’s not a special occasion item), it likely needs to go. Nothing in the focal part of your closet should not fit or be something you’re awaiting a next iteration or revolution for. If you have space to store these items because you simply can’t part with them, remove and put there. If you’re like most of us, and have limited closet space, these items need to go! If/when your body changes or if/when this item comes back in style, you will re-purchase it with a fresh perspective. 

HOLD A FIT SESSION: If you’re questioning an item, put it on your body before you decide to keep or toss it. If you like, but it doesn’t fit as you wish, get rid of it. There are many items we may covet, but sometimes the silhouette doesn’t make us feel like our best selves. There are plenty of options to go around, so after detoxing what doesn’t work, make it your mission to understand your body type and find what does!

ORGANIZE: After completing the detox portion, organization for future days of getting dressed is key. Keep like items together and organization by classification: tops, bottoms, blazers/jackets, dresses, skirts, t-shirts, athletic-wear, etc. Then within each category, set by color — cool to warm merchandising keeps things looking beautiful and enticing.
