Bikini.com Picks: Must-Have Beach Accessories
This may sound crazy, but in the way that beach style isn’t just about a swimsuit, fashion week isn’t just about the clothes. Don’t get me wrong, the clothes are amazing, but that’s not why accessories directors from magazines like Vogue, Lucky, and W Magazine are sitting in the front rows. It’s not the only reason that we went to New York for NYFW! Where else would we scope out the latest sunglasses, sandals and hats for you to sport on the sand? The following pieces from SS15’s finest collections are just a few of our favorite catwalk-to-boardwalk accouterments, take note and enjoy!
Sunglasses—while protecting your corneas from sunburn and allowing you to shamelessly stare at people without them knowing—will tell you a lot about a person. I like to think of shades in relation to Sex & The City: Samantha is a pair of Michael Kors Aviators, Charlotte is a classic rounder frame by Osklen or Chanel, Miranda is this Elton John-esque pair by Carolina Herrera, and Carrie is the whacky pair by Thom Browne or oversized shades by Karen Walker. They’ve got to fit your face, but also your personality. This Spring is sure to be a scorcher, so make sure the sunglass of your choice has an SPF.
Nothing like a bit of nautical rope to tie a beachy outfit together or fill up that bit of awkward bare ankle space that’s bound to happen when you’re wearing high-waist jeans. We probably shouldn’t be telling you this, but if you’re jetting off on vacation before Cynthia Rowley, Michael Kors, MM6 Margiela, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Takoon, or Tibi release these—it’s a pretty easy DIY, just tie a bit of sailor’s rope around the toe or under the heel of your shoe, wrap around your ankle and voila!
Frumpy Flats No More!
Summers spent wearing ratty flip-flops are over! Throw them away. We’re begging you! Yes, Havaianas and Nike slip-ons (which we thought were meant to be dorm shower shoes) are comfortable, we agree, but are they fashionable? No! Slip into cuties from Oscar De La Renta, Peter Som, Tibi, and Marc Jacobs for Spring spent on the beaches of St. Tropez or St. Lucia. You’ll thank us when your feet evoke looks of jealousy.
What would a spring collection be without a few standout hats from Donna Karan, Mara Hoffman, Public School, Tibi, Karen Walker, or Tess Giberson to shield you from the summer sun? When I was little, my beach hats consisted of baseball caps and golf visors (and my dad still wears these whenever we go on vacation) so I think it’s time to step into the light and under the sun, and adopt a new beach hat. If you’re not verging on being albino, like myself, you can go for the shorter brim for show, while I take on the Stetson-inspired Tess Giberson piece.
