Bikini Whisperer: 2016 Trends That Aren't Going Anywhere

Posted by Bikini Owner

Welcome to our bikini advice column, featuring the hard-earned wisdom of our very own swimsuit master, the Bikini Whisperer. Looking for some advice of your own? Drop us a line !

Hi Bikini Whisperer,

The New Year is right around the corner, and I want to clear out the old to make way for the new — starting with my closet. I tend to hoard clothes but really want to donate items collecting dust. What trends are sticking around? I'd hate to give away items I later would want to wear.

What a great way to start off 2017! But before you skim your closet for pieces to toss or new to shop, read this list of five trends sticking around in 2017.

#1 The slip dress

If you think the minimalist slip dress is a thing of the past, think again. New renditions look fresh for 2017 — try oversize floral prints, midi lengths, and mixed-media textures. It’s the one staple you should definitely keep around for those “I don’t know what to wear” moments. Dress it up with strappy shoes and multi-layered chain chokers or dress it down with a layering tee and flats — no matter the approach you take, the slip dress will save the day. It’s modern and fuss-free.

#2 Velvet

We’re obsessing over velvet bikinis. Do stay away from head-to-toe velvet. Opt to highlight your effortless style with a single textured piece.

#3 Something Sheer

Time and time again, we see translucent fabrications used in an array of ways — but it will look exceptional mixed with alternative fabrics in 2017. Unexpected sheer pieces, like these leggings, take wardrobe essentials from basic to next-level, look-at-me statements.

#4 One-Piece

Don’t toss your one-piece! It’s (still) the swimwear silhouette gaining momentum in 2017. Shop reinvented maillots with up-to-there leg cuts, unexpected textures, and skimpy to full-coverage. There’s literally a one-piece out there you’ll love no matter your style taste.

Mara Hoffman one-piece, $168

Boys and Arrows, $183

KORE Mykonos bodysuit, $207

#5 Athleisure

If you’re sick of this word, get used to it — designers nowadays incorporate this trend in everyday collections. Activewear pieces are no longer part of your yoga or cycling class ensemble — it’s a lifestyle. We especially adore the new metallic sheen, laser-cut shredding, and polished tailoring, perfect to pair with ready-to-wear pieces.
