We can't keep track of how many places there are in the country to take a kick-ass barre class. With boutique studios opening up virtually everywhere, you'd be kind of crazy not to give it a try.

Our favorite place to sidle up to the barre for a killer low-impact workout is Pure Barre, a rapidly expanding franchise (there are over 200 locations nationwide) that offers a sleek, stylish workout experience that also seriously whips you into shape.

Founded by former dancer Carre Dorr, Pure Barre blends ballet, Pilates, and yoga with controlled isometric movements — think tiny, tiny isolated moves — that hone in on specific muscle groups and whittle them down. You use a barre, of course, but you also incorporate light weights, textured playground balls, and tension tubes. The balls may look like fun, but whoa—after you've squeezed one between your thighs while doing a crazy amount of squats, you might find yourself swearing off kickball for life.

What we really like about this method is its super-fun, motivating spirit. This isn't a studio where you feel intimidated or out of sync: Even for brand-new beginners, the experience is welcoming and attainable, even if you're really, really dying out there. The music is uplifting, the trainers are encouraging, and your fellow barre-mates are stoked to be there, sweating and dancing and living it up. If your club days are over but you're looking for a place to groove, this just might be the ticket.
