The Perfect Derby Day Drink? A Bikini Basil Julep!

Posted by Bikini Owner

Post time for the 141st annual Kentucky Derby is 6:24 EST tomorrow, May 2. Which means you have at least a whole morning (if you're on the West Coast, that is) to gather all you'll need to craft the perfect cocktail to sip while you watch the ponies. Yes, a mint julep is the traditional tipple, and we've got nothing against that bracing blend of bourbon, syrup and mint. But since we like to do things a bit beachier around here, we thought we'd whip up a signature drink that would be just as delicious to sip poolside as it is clutching your betting tickets. Fear not: we haven't deviated too terribly from the original, just spun it on it's ear a bit. How? By adding a crush of herbaceous flavor in the form of adding muddled basil to the de rigeur mint. The result is a super-summery, fresh flavor that blends so well with bourbon or whiskey. If you're feeling especially inspired, whizzing the whole thing in the blender to a flurry, frosty finish would be especially refreshing. We have a winner!

Bikini Basil Julep

(makes 1 drink)

6 large basil leaves, torn, plus more for garnish

3 sprigs fresh mint, torn, plus more for garnish

3 oz Kentucky bourbon (Woodford Reserve is the offical bourbon of the Derby)

2 tbs simple syrup

In a cocktail shaker, mix torn basil and mint leaves with syrup, cover with ice and shake vigorously to muddle flavors with syrup. Pour into a highball glass or julep cup, add bourbon, top with more ice if desired, stir gently. Garnish with mint and basil leaves. If blending, place in blender and blend until ice is crushed but not liquified.
