Makeup Artist Theo Kogan's Favorite Vegan Beauty Picks

NYC-based makeup artist Theo Kogan is a rock star. No, literally: Kogan was the frontwoman for the Lunachicks, a band known in the 1990s as much for their outrageous stage prescence as for their music. All that time primping for the stage left a huge imprint on Kogan's life, and in 2009 she decided to launch her own line of lip gloss, dubbed Armour. She's also built a career out of painting faces, doing makeup for runway shows and editorial projects, and of course the occasional budding pop star.

A vegan herself for years, Kogan recently added a completely vegan formula to the Armour collection, Armour V. That addition is part of a growing trend in beauty: products that are totally free of animal-based ingredients like lanolin, beeswax and carmine, which are commonly found in conventional beauty products. Vegan beauty products offer consumers a way to get dolled up without compromising their beliefs.

Brands like 100 Percent Pure and Pacifica feature an entire range of skin and body care products that are completely vegan, while boutique beauty breands like Urban Decay have added vegan products to their existing cosmetic ranges. Do you have to be vegan to love these potions? No way! Even if you love your burgers, there's no denying that consciously crafted beauty products work wonders for your skin.

What vegan products does Kogan stock in her own beauty arsenal? Here are a few of her favorites.

F. Miller Face Oil

What I love about this amazing face oil, besides the fact that it smells great, almost medicinal (in a good way) is that it works so well on my combination skin: It soothes dry patches but doesn't leave other spots slick, just gives me a healthy glow even when I haven’t caught enough ZZZ’s. I met founder Fran Miller recently and she is wonderful — I love to support people pursuing their passions.

Acure Ultra Hydrating Body Wash

This ultra-moisturizing pumpkin- and coconut-scented creamy wash doesn’t leave anyone in my family feeling  itchy — and we are all sensitive! I get extra sensitive when the seasons change, and this body wash eradicates that tight, itchy feeling that dry air can cause.

Armour V Gilda Lip Gloss

I literally created this gloss inspired by a pink highlighter on my desk. It’s a perfect, uplifting pink for any time of year, and it’s vegan, moisturizing and long lasting, which is nearly impossible to find in a gloss formula. This month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and all profits of Gilda gloss will go to

Priti NYC Nail Varnish

My favorite shade is Tuscany Superb: a deep burgundy hue that I love to slip on my nails when fall arrives. Priti NYC has a billion colors and they are all five-free [that's formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate, toluene, formaldehyde resin, and camphor.]
