DIY Pitaya Lip Scrub for a Killer Pout

The summer may have sorrowfully come to a close, but a true Bikini girl never stays inside for long. You've already endured lectures from both your mother and your best friend (a.k.a, the Internet) cautioning you against the woes of sun damage, so you've basically got your sunscreen game on lock. But soaking up UV rays, especially in the brisk fall weather, doesn't just affect your skin—your lips take a hit too. And a dried out, wind-zapped pucker is just, well, not something you want to bring home, if you catch our drift.

Luckily, we've got solutions to your ailing lips. Literally. In a word? Pitaya. That's the fancy, exotic-sounding name for dragon fruit, if you’re wondering. It's pink and vibrant on the outside and speckled on the inside, but pitaya isn't just a pretty face. The fruit is rich in antioxidants and vitamins B3 and C, meaning it's got incredible anti-aging properties; plus, it hydrates dry, irritated lips like a charm. Not to mention the stuff smells tropically delicious (and quasi-addictive). Mmmmmmmm, pitaya.

So what more could you want this season than a DIY dragon fruit lip scrub how-to? The formula is crazy simple, but super effective; and you'll be hard-pressed to find anything like it in stores. You dig? Keep reading to find out how to make your lips kissably flawless, pitaya-style.

Homemade Pitaya Lip Scrub

  • A potted lip balm (or Vaseline lip therapy)
  • ½ tsp raw cane sugar
  • ½ tsp honey
  • ½ tsp olive oil
  • fresh dragon fruit

  1. Start by emptying about half of your lip balm or Vaseline out of the pot.
  2. Add sugar, 2-3 drops of honey and 2-3 drops of olive oil (quantities will differ slightly depending on how big your pot of lip balm is).
  3. Peel your dragon fruit and purée one or two cubes. Then add in several drops.
  4. Mix it all up, and your lip scrub is fini!

To use, gently massage a small dollop of scrub onto your upper and lower lips for about a minute, then rinse off with water and seal with your favorite lip balm. Finally, behold your perfect pitaya-rich pout!
